PÅ GRÄNSEN
(On The Border - July 29, 2006)
A borderline event!
In Norwegian and Swedish the name mean two things - on the border and on the edge. This is
a fitting play on words considering that the race starts in Strømstad,
Sweden, ends in Halden, Norway, and has occasionally been pelted with gale force
winds in an area that has more than its share of shoals.
In 2003 over fifty vessels competed in this very social and rapidly growing
regatta. The event was not held in 2004 due to ongoing construction of a new bridge between Norway and Sweden (picture above is of the old bridge). The entries ranging from dinghies and smaller family crewed yachts to larger sailing machines sail two different courses (click on map below). The resulting sail in company for the final stretch in through the narrow Idefjord provides an unforgettable experience for spectators and participants alike.
The activities in Strømstad the day before the race, as well as the party and
prizegiving ceremony in Halden on Saturday evening are events in themselves. Despite being on
their respective sides of the border, the two hosting towns have always had close relations.
In fact the northernmost 150 km. of this part of the Swedish coast was Norwegian territory
until 1904.
Join up and sail on the border.
